HISTORY OF HAGEY’S SCHOOL BUS COMPANY

Today

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES INC.

In the 1920's Clarence Godshall Hagey left the family farm, located across Lower Road from the Souderton High School.  Clarence was the last of ten children born on the farm and there was simply not enough work on the farm.  Clarence found a job as a mechanic at Bergey’s garage in Franconia. He also drove bus part time for Harvey G. Ziegler of Souderton.  He later bought Ziegler’s bus company.

As the surrounding population grew, one-room schoolhouses in Franconia Township became overcrowded. The school board needed someone to bus students from neighborhoods to consolidated schools. In 1936 Clarence signed his first bus contract with the Franconia Township School Board for an amazing $1.50 per day.  Clarence was assisted in the school bus business by his wife Elsie and their children.

Just before WWII to help his business grow and keep the buses busy when not transporting students, Clarence operated daily routes from Skippack and Vernfield to factories in Souderton and Telford.

During World War II charter buses were unavailable.  So bus operators used school buses for charter service.  After the war, charter buses were still difficult to purchase, so Clarence bought a used troop transport bus and had comfortable seats installed.

In 1954, Clarence sold the charter bus portion of his business to his oldest son Gerald.  That company eventually became known as Hagey Tours.

Clarence and Elsie continued to operate Hagey’s School Bus Company with their three school buses.  As the student population grew so did the fleet of school buses.

In 1970 Clarence and Elsie were ready to retire.  Donald their youngest son and his wife Linda bought the company, and had it incorporated calling it Transportation Services, Inc.  The fleet was an amazing 17 school buses.

In 1977 Don and Linda contracted with the Central Bucks School District, and opened a second school bus facility to transport Central Bucks School District students.  They operated 25 school buses out of the facility for 20 years until they sold it to the Central Bucks District.

In 1990 with the growing schoolbus fleet, they moved from the village of Franconia to a new and much larger terminal on Schoolhouse Road.  At that time, they had 65 school buses.  The school bus fleet continued to grow as the population grew.

2021 President Linda Hagey and her over 200 dedicated employees and managers operate over 150 school buses, a large fleet of vans, and mini school buses.  They are celebrating eighty-Seven years of excellence in school bus service.
